When My Husband's Apple Watch Became My Lifesaver

Written on

The Gift of an Apple Watch

When my husband handed me his Apple Watch, I was initially hesitant. He had attempted to bond with it for two years, but their relationship never flourished. Ironically, his lack of attachment to the device ultimately played a crucial role in saving my life. Although he may soon leave this world, I will endure.

At first, I was reluctant to wear the watch, fearing it would incessantly buzz and distract me.

"This constant stimulation feels overwhelming," I thought.

I didn’t want to be like Pavlov's dog, responding to the whims of bored individuals texting and calling at all hours, attempting to fill their emotional voids. Many of my friends possess phones and conversations to share, which only added to my anxiety about potential disturbances.

Fortunately, my concerns were unfounded; my friends have their own lives, filled with jobs and families, leaving little time to interrupt my wrist.

Once I secured the Apple Watch to my arm, I discovered it only vibrates to remind me to stand. I learned that being sedentary for extended periods, even if I exercise daily, is detrimental to my health. This realization frustrated me, prompting me to indulge in smoking instead—a habit I find far more enjoyable than sitting.

As I pondered my new routine, I couldn't help but question Apple's intentions. If I am aware that my Apple Watch might be conditioning me for an impending authoritarian regime, should I remove it? Or is this training essential for my survival?

Each time my watch prompts me to stand, I feel as though I'm surrendering my autonomy. I shudder to think about those who don’t wear such devices.

"My goodness, what will become of them in a dictatorship?" I wonder.

While they proudly display their free will with outdated timepieces, my watch-trained companions and I will be ready to heed commands.

What value does free will hold if it leads to oblivion? I can already envision laughing at the chaos as I wait for direction from my wrist.

Thanks to BOF for encouraging me to include 'that' as often as possible. And for editing this piece of writing with his own free will.
