The common thread among ghost-hunting television shows is the glaring lack of any real ghosts. Physics provides a clear explanation: our universe lacks the mechanisms to allow for the existence of disembodied spirits.

As a scientist, I find the notion of ghosts incredibly frustrating. The idea of a "spirit" contradicts our understanding of the natural world and its workings. Furthermore, despite centuries of ghost searches, credible evidence remains nonexistent.

While we can demonstrate that a creature like Bigfoot exists by capturing it, proving that such a creature doesn't exist is impossible. Nevertheless, entities that blatantly contradict established natural laws can be considered nonexistent. For instance, insects cannot exceed a certain size due to respiratory limitations, and green stars cannot exist, as those that emit peak radiation in the green spectrum also emit all other colors, appearing white to human observers. Both giant ants and green stars are simply impossible.

What Defines a Ghost?

The term "ghost" typically describes spiritual entities believed to exist beyond the living realm. I avoid the term "supernatural" since it suggests something outside the laws of nature, hence not part of our physical universe.

Common characteristics attributed to ghosts include:

  • A ghost is often seen as a manifestation of a deceased individual, believed to linger as their soul or spirit in the physical realm.

  • It is thought that ghosts retain consciousness and identity independent of their physical forms.

  • As ethereal entities, ghosts are believed to take on various forms, typically resembling the deceased.

  • Ghosts are thought to interact with the physical world by moving objects, creating disturbances, or altering temperatures.

  • They may also avoid interaction with the physical realm, such as becoming invisible or passing through walls.

  • Some ghosts represent "residual hauntings," where their energy or imprint is left in a specific location, replaying past events or emotions.

  • Ghosts are described as being composed of pure energy; if they were made of matter, they would be detectable and unable to perform ghostly acts, like passing through walls.

    NOTE: The term "pure energy" lacks a precise scientific definition. It generally refers to energy not directly linked to a matter particle. Examples include electromagnetic radiation and magnetic fields, but both are generated by the acceleration of electrically charged particles, so they are not completely separate from matter.

Given that ghosts can allegedly create sounds, appear visibly, and alter temperatures, they must be part of our natural world and subject to physics laws. Here are some relevant points:

  • The First Law of Thermodynamics: This law states that energy cannot be created or destroyed. While some argue that human energy remains in the environment as ghosts, this energy dissipates after death, either as heat or transferred to other organisms. Unlike ghosts, living beings can replenish their energy.

  • The Second Law of Thermodynamics: This law states that heat naturally flows from hot to cold regions and that the entropy of an isolated system cannot decrease over time. Any interaction a ghost has with its environment uses energy that must be replenished. Living beings can restore energy through food, while ghosts lack a known means to recharge.

In summary, there's no plausible way for pure energy to assume a human-like form, engage with the environment, or remember its past self. This would necessitate the presence of matter, which should be detectable by both the Large Hadron Collider and the countless ghost hunters who consistently find no evidence of ghosts.

Who Wants to Live Forever?

If you’ve followed this discussion, the conclusion is likely clear: if ghosts don’t exist, then neither do souls, and by extension, there is no afterlife as we envision it. The notion of becoming a "force ghost," akin to Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, is simply not realistic.

As Stephen Hawking once said, “Broken computers don’t go to heaven.” The brain constitutes the mind, and without matter, there's nothing left of an individual. While energy can't be destroyed, it also can't morph into an ethereal version of you.

However, there's no need for concern. To paraphrase Mark Twain, “I was dead for billions of years before I was alive, and it didn't inconvenience me at all!” We originate from nothingness and ultimately return to it. As the old Epicurean saying goes, “I was not, I was. I am not, I do not care.”

For me, oblivion is preferable to aimlessly floating in a dusty attic forever, lamenting an unreciprocated love. It's far better than enduring eternal torment in a lake of molten fire—options that have never been available.

The evidence is compelling.

Ghosts do not exist.

And there is nothing to fear.
