Cats: From Ancient Deities to Modern Companions

Chapter 1: The Luxurious Lives of Cats
Cats truly live remarkable lives, as evidenced by my three felines who enjoy a life of comfort. They spend their days lounging in sunbeams, observing birds and squirrels outside their window, napping on a spacious bed, and playing with an array of toys.
There's even a box that remains in the middle of the floor, untouched since one of them played with it weeks ago. I can't bear to throw it away, fearing it might upset them.
Indeed, these cats have it made.
They absolutely deserve this comfort, especially considering the hardships faced by their ancestors. In ancient Egypt, cats were revered as divine beings; it’s said they’ve never forgotten this status. They lived alongside queens and pharaohs, and even had monuments erected in their honor.
During the Persian-Egyptian wars, cats were released onto battlefields, knowing that the Egyptians would hesitate to harm their sacred creatures. This clever tactic led to the Egyptians surrendering, prioritizing the safety of their beloved felines.
The adoration for cats extended even into the afterlife. When a pharaoh died, it was common to take a cherished cat along to the next world. It makes one ponder just how extraordinary their lives were.
Cats' Journey to Domestication
Approximately 10,000 years ago, cats discovered they could thrive on a diet of mice and pests by cohabiting with humans on farms. They effectively domesticated themselves, enjoying a plentiful food supply until an ill-fated Pope condemned them as demonic, leading to widespread extermination.
This tragic decision inadvertently contributed to the bubonic plague, which devastated Europe during the Dark Ages. Fortunately, cats have chosen to forgive humanity and grant us a second chance. Today, over 373 million cats are cherished as pets globally, with 26% of households in the United States welcoming one or two into their homes.
Cats in the Modern World
House cats today lead incredibly cozy lives compared to their wild counterparts. Stray cats, however, face numerous challenges. Many domestic cats live rent-free in warm homes, often with at least one human to cater to their every need.
In 2022, Americans spent a staggering $136.8 billion on their pets, which includes veterinary services as well as food and toys. This spending reflects the deep affection cat owners have for their furry friends. Even if our cats would be just as happy in a cardboard box, we go out of our way to provide them with fun and luxurious accessories.
While this may not seem remarkable, for a stray cat struggling to find food and avoid dangers, it is indeed extraordinary. (This is your reminder to visit a shelter and consider adopting a furry friend.)
Some cats truly hit the jackpot regarding their living arrangements. Cat cafes are becoming popular, making it easier for people to adopt.
For example, Willow Biden, a tabby cat, resides in the White House, where she enjoys the company of the leader of the free world and a dedicated staff. That’s a pretty sweet deal!
Another notable feline is Larry, who has lived at 10 Downing Street, the residence of the British Prime Minister, for over a decade, outlasting five prime ministers. Although his political preferences remain unknown, he likely maintains a neutral stance.
In St. Petersburg, Russia, a colony of fifty cats has made the Hermitage Museum their home since the 18th century. Initially brought in to control mice, these cats now enjoy a life of leisure, complete with their own bank account and publicist.
At the Lanesborough Hotel in London, a Siberian Forest cat named Lilibet lounges by the fireplace. Meanwhile, Hodge, a cat at Southwark Cathedral, roams in search of treats from visitors.
Even at the governor’s mansion in Minnesota, a cat named Honey may be moving to a new home, delighting cat lovers everywhere.
Whether in ancient tombs, cozy homes, or the residence of a world leader, cats have a knack for enjoying life’s luxuries. As James Herriot famously said, “Cats are connoisseurs of comfort.”
Who can argue with that?
