Empowerment Through Resilience: Insights from Claire Quigley

Chapter 1: Celebrating Influential Women
In recognition of Women’s History Month, I took the opportunity to sit down with an inspiring woman in my life, Claire Quigley. Our first meeting was over a year ago, and I immediately sensed her potential to be a significant influence on my personal development. Despite being just twenty-three, Claire possesses a wealth of wisdom about life that many can learn from.
As a dedicated businesswoman, a passionate advocate for women's sports, a former NCAA Division One field hockey player, a Certified Personal Trainer, and a self-described Chief Vibes Officer (CVO), Claire motivates me to strive for my best self daily. I hope this discussion leaves you with a similar sense of empowerment.
The Journey of Motivation
From her childhood, Claire was determined to reach the Division One level in athletics. She channeled her youthful energy into this goal, balancing high-level competition with academic excellence. This commitment led her to proudly represent both Siena and Wagner College in NCAA Division One field hockey.
During her college years, Claire's life was dominated by field hockey, involving over 20 hours of practice, weightlifting, meetings, and games each week. While she thrived in this environment, she soon realized that her life could encompass more than just sports.
As she transitioned from college to her professional career, her motivations evolved. Claire now draws inspiration from the “future version of herself” and the legacy she wishes to create for her family. Rather than focusing on competing with others, she strives for continuous self-improvement.
Setting Priorities and Cultivating Habits
Claire emphasizes the importance of prioritizing activities that foster growth and happiness. She believes the people you surround yourself with shape who you become, so she is intentional about her social circle, seeking out those who positively influence her.
Health and fitness are cornerstones of Claire's philosophy, as she understands the importance of establishing healthy habits early in life. She advocates for young adults to build good habits before personal responsibilities increase. As a morning person, Claire takes pride in her early workouts and often incorporates multiple productive activities into her day.
Furthermore, she values the subconscious habits that influence her communication, both with herself and others. By nurturing these habits, she cultivates an atmosphere of self-acceptance and open dialogue.
Mental Resilience in Action
Kara Lawson, the Duke Women’s Basketball Coach, famously said, “It never gets easier. What happens is, you become someone that handles hard stuff better.” This sentiment resonates deeply with Claire, who has developed a strong ability to endure challenges. She often reminds herself, “If I could survive college pre-season, I can survive today,” highlighting the rigorous training she underwent in preparation for her sport.
Coming from a military family, Claire has learned the essence of mental toughness from her parents and brother, who have all served in the Army. Inspired by their resilience, she has cultivated a mindset that empowers her to face and overcome obstacles.
Claire actively seeks new challenges, relishing the sense of achievement that comes from overcoming difficulties. She recalls a particularly challenging experience climbing Mt. Washington with her mother, noting that while it was tough, it paled in comparison to her pre-season training.
Guidance for Young Women
Many women, including Claire, often grapple with feelings of inadequacy and discomfort in their own skin. However, Claire found strength by fostering a positive relationship with her body through weightlifting and healthy eating. She encourages other women to embrace self-acceptance, recognizing that our relationship with ourselves is foundational to our success.
Claire advises young women to savor the journey of life, appreciating both the highs and lows. She emphasizes the importance of being grateful for who you are now while remaining excited about who you aspire to become. Remember to take moments to enjoy life’s beauty and celebrate your achievements with loved ones.
