# Essential Business Insights I Wish I Learned Sooner

Written on

Chapter 1: The Journey of Learning

Hindsight often proves to be the best teacher. After immersing myself in countless articles and YouTube videos about entrepreneurship, I often felt invincible, ready to take on any challenge. Yet, much of what I learned came from my own missteps. Lacking a mentor and direction, I was like a fish out of water, struggling to find my way. Fortunately, I did learn valuable lessons along the way. Below, I share insights from my experience with a failed clothing line, hoping they might guide others.

Section 1.1: Multitasking Can Be Counterproductive

The first step to establishing a brand is identifying your unique strengths. What differentiates you from others in the market? I recognized that I could cultivate a community through my clothing line, especially given the rising popularity of streetwear in 2013. However, my impatience undermined my efforts, contributing to the brand's downfall. I often found myself paralyzed by too many ideas, wanting to tackle everything simultaneously. Life doesn’t operate that way. With time, I learned the value of patience, which positively affected my productivity.

Section 1.2: Motivation is Fleeting

Inspiration is not constant; it fluctuates. Some days, you may feel like a superhero, while other days, you might want to give up. The key is to tap into your "why" during those tough moments. My motivation stemmed from my desire to create something enjoyable for others. It’s crucial to push through when you lack inspiration. Resilience and determination are vital for long-term success. Time is precious, and turning back midway is not an option.

Chapter 2: Embracing Failure and Learning

The first video titled "8 Etsy Business Lessons I Wish I Knew Sooner" delves into essential lessons for budding entrepreneurs, emphasizing the importance of learning from failures and experiences.

Section 2.1: Failing is Part of the Journey

Initially, I feared failure because of the attention it drew. However, I later realized that failure is an integral part of learning in business. Experiencing setbacks early on can be invaluable. If you’re not encountering failures, you might not be pushing your limits. Sharing my struggles has been more beneficial than concealing them.

Subsection 2.1.1: Letting Go of Perfectionism

Overcoming perfectionism in business

Striving for perfection can hinder progress. I used to be a perfectionist, aiming for excellence from the outset. If I could change one thing, it would be to focus on building my brand and gaining visibility rather than obsessing over being perfect.

Section 2.2: The Importance of Promotion

Successful brands like Apple, Nike, and WWE share one common trait: they never cease promoting themselves. Promotion is vital for any business. Without it, there are no sales. Even luxury brands have strategies to market themselves. I made the mistake of assuming customers would come to me without any effort. In business, there's always a potential customer who hasn't heard of you yet.

Chapter 3: Seeking Assistance and Facing Fears

The second video titled "8 Lessons I Wish I Knew When Starting My First Business" reinforces the importance of mentorship and learning from past experiences.

Section 3.1: Asking for Guidance is Acceptable

I previously mentioned the absence of a mentor, which I regret. Genuine help can be hard to find, especially when starting a business with limited resources. Reflecting on my journey, I realize that building capital could have allowed me to seek assistance and embrace feedback from others.

Section 3.2: Embracing Fear as a Catalyst for Growth

Experiencing nerves in new ventures is a sign you’re on the right path. I vividly recall the anxiety I felt when reaching out to a manufacturer for the first time. The challenge of needing a significant sales figure before moving forward was daunting but ultimately necessary for growth. Embrace fear, and channel it into action; it can lead to valuable experiences.

Chapter 4: The Power of Discipline

Discipline is the hidden force that distinguishes the average from the exceptional. It requires effort, which is why few possess it. Mastering discipline allows you to adhere to your plan and reap the benefits of your hard work. Although it’s tempting to avoid uncomfortable tasks, such as watching educational content, I’ve learned that these efforts contribute to personal and professional growth. Ultimately, the key to lasting success lies in discipline.

"All success begins with self-discipline. It starts with you." — Dwayne Johnson
