The Future of Michigan: A Safe Haven Amid Climate Crisis
Written on
Last night, President Joe Biden addressed the pressing issues surrounding American democracy, highlighting the looming dangers posed by MAGA extremism. His message was clear: voting for Democratic candidates in the upcoming elections is crucial for preserving our democracy. It’s time to send the MAGA supporters back to obscurity.
While I felt motivated to elaborate on the political landscape, I find myself shifting focus to another urgent crisis that is gripping our nation.
Climate Change: An Urgent Threat
Here are some alarming updates from around the globe:
A staggering one-third of Pakistan is currently submerged. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif labeled the flooding as “the worst in the country's history.”

The western United States is facing wildfires or remains a powder keg waiting to ignite.

Melting ice caps globally will inevitably lead to sea-level rise of at least one meter, with no way to reverse this trend.

I could continue sharing headlines like these indefinitely.

So, I pose a question to anyone reading this:
Why on earth are you still living in or relocating to deserts and coastal regions? Are you genuinely that oblivious? Is it a misguided sense of nihilism that leads you to believe your lives and those of your families are expendable as long as you find fleeting happiness?
A Call to Action
This piece doesn’t need to be lengthy. I recognize that if I fill up this space with unnecessary words, I might earn more, but I won't drag this out today.
Today in Michigan was delightful—beautiful, in fact! This summer has been one of the most enjoyable I can recall in my 53 years here. Remarkably, even the mosquito population has significantly decreased!

Meanwhile, the rest of the world is either ablaze, submerged, or on the brink of disaster.
Are jobs your only concern?
Do you not have families?
Do any of you look beyond the immediate future?
What will your children face in a decade or less, after you've abandoned them amidst an impending apocalypse?
I urge you to consider moving to Michigan or another northern area as soon as you can establish a life for yourself and your family. Even if you are uncertain about what lies ahead, staying in the south will likely lead to more suffering.
The Promise of the North
I assure you, few will thrive in the southern regions. Only the billionaires and their aides, who have retreated underground, will find comfort.
For ordinary folks like us, however, vast opportunities await in the North! As temperatures rise, this reality will only become more pronounced.
Housing is still affordable, but that won’t last long as the inevitable migration of smarter and more desperate individuals begins.
The coasts and deserts are becoming increasingly uninhabitable without the exorbitant cost of siphoning water from the North. We who reside in the North will fiercely protect what we have.
It belongs to us.
If you desire it, you’ll need to come here to experience it.

The North Offers Abundance
Jobs are abundant, but this won't last indefinitely.
Starting a new business or working remotely has never been simpler.
Sure, our political scene is unusual, but that’s true everywhere. Michigan tends to occupy a middle ground politically. We are the original no-nonsense Americans. When our leaders and voters are wise enough to reject outright fascism, they prioritize what’s best for the people of Michigan and the beleaguered democracy of America. We welcome innovation and inspiration, yet remain grounded in practical common sense.

We strive for what benefits the majority, but honestly, we need you here.
The Midwest requires fresh perspectives after years of talent draining southward and conservatives dismantling our educational and social welfare systems. We need more progressives and moderates to ensure the strength of our democracy continues to rise. We require more optimistic individuals to guide the disillusioned back toward the common sense and equality that once made the Midwest a beacon of opportunity.
We need YOU here now to preserve the Great Lakes.
You could flourish here.
Your descendants could have a chance at prosperity rather than merely surviving in the unavoidable ecological disaster looming over the southern regions of the Americas.
Yes, winters can be harsh here, but so are the inevitable race riots, floods, and wildfires. The choice to relocate is yours, but it may not remain available for long.
Mother Nature is indifferent to your plans in “beautiful” California, Arizona, Texas, and so forth. Her agenda appears to be to cleanse half the planet until we regain our respect for the environment. It seems she intends to maintain the Great Lakes as a near paradise.
Last Chance
Yes, winters can be extremely cold here for several months, but they are predictable and easy to prepare for. Flash floods and wildfires ravaging the western and southern states? Not so much, right? Michigan winters are lessons in appreciation rather than fear. They end eventually, leading us back to our increasingly lovely springs, summers, and fall seasons filled with vibrant colors.

Earlier, I mentioned that Michigan might be "immune" to climate change. That was an overstatement. Some experts suggest that climate change could actually enhance conditions in Michigan!

Oh, and did I mention that we host a significant portion of the planet's freshwater all in one location? Twenty percent of Earth's surface freshwater resides in the lakes surrounding my beautiful peninsulas. While the western states ponder where their next drink will come from, much of Michigan is enjoying a refreshing dip today.

No water means no life.
As I stated, the math is straightforward.
Relocate north or witness your family suffer. Watch everything you've built either wither away or be swept away.
Listen or not, I’m confident that my family and I will be fine. You won’t receive many more warnings from me. For many of you, it might already be too late. Mother Nature and her companion Evolution have seemingly made their assessments.
And yes, I’m unashamed to say, “I told you so,” instead of offering you a lifeline. I believe in evolution too. People typically take action only when absolutely necessary. Today, I feel compelled to extend a lifeline to you. It’s in my best interest to help you escape danger and guide this country back to a more stable path. How will I feel about it tomorrow when I can no longer afford to be so generous? Perhaps not as magnanimous. The kindness of the North beckons you now, but like Lake Mead, it won’t last.
