The Interplay of Poetry and Science: A Balance for the Mind

Written on

Chapter 1: The Artistic Side of Science

During my graduate studies, I was taken aback to find that many of my peers, who were constantly immersed in teaching or laboratory work, had vibrant interests in the arts. From playing carillon music on weekends to composing symphonies and creating expansive abstract paintings, most of my chemistry colleagues were actively pursuing artistic endeavors.

At that time, I was convinced—mainly because I thought I had all the answers—that stepping away from the rigors of science to engage in a completely different activity was refreshing. It represented a shift from the analytical left brain to the creative right brain, which I believed was necessary for maintaining my mental well-being.

I was absolutely correct in that belief. Even now, immersing myself in a painting or crafting a poem is as rejuvenating as taking a nap or entering a deep meditative state. This creative outlet is as vital to me as food, water, and affection. However, I never fully grasped why this oscillation between the left and right brain was so crucial.

While sorting through some old notebooks filled with ideas and quotes, an aged piece of newsprint slipped out, as if the Universe were delivering a message:

“Poetry is not the proper antithesis to prose, but to science. Poetry is opposed to science, and prose to metre. The proper and immediate object of science is the acquirement of communication of truth; the proper and immediate object of poetry is the communication of immediate pleasure.” —Samuel T. Coleridge

Truth and pleasure. These days, I feel that many of us are lacking in both. Today, I plan to shut off the news, ignore the chaos of war and pandemics for a while, and spend the afternoon with fellow artists who revel in adding color to paper and canvas. It’s far more enjoyable than napping!

What activities provide you with a joyful escape from the chaos? If you pen a poem or an essay about this, please tag me! I would love to hear your thoughts!

Additionally, take a moment to appreciate one of the most unique and beautifully crafted poems I’ve encountered, by my friend Shadowgnosis:

Chapter 2: The Importance of Balance

Once again, I extend my gratitude to my favorite creative ScienceDuuude and his inviting WotWU community. Keep creating! :D
