The Surprising Insights of Apple Watch Ultra Owners
Written on
As a strong advocate for firsthand experience, I believe that forming an opinion on a product before using it can be misleading. While it's common to have preconceived notions influenced by others, true understanding only comes from personal interaction.
I initially underestimated the AirPods Pro 2, dismissing them based on early reviews. However, they turned out to be one of Apple's standout releases in 2022.
Unlike that situation, I was eager for the Apple Watch Ultra from the moment it was introduced at last month's Far Out event. I felt compelled to find reasons to justify my desire for it.
Having no prior expectations, I refrained from rushing to conclusions. To provide you with the best insights, I believe the Apple Watch Ultra requires thorough evaluation over time, which is why I will be sharing more about it in the upcoming months.
Today, I’ll share ten insights that only owners of the Apple Watch Ultra might know.
1. You frequently check the battery level
Behind all the impressive features of the Apple Watch Ultra lies one significant concern: battery life.
Upon unboxing, you're greeted with a breathtaking image of a snowy Alpine landscape, evoking the spirit of adventure for outdoor enthusiasts. Yet it raises a question: can these explorers really tolerate a smartwatch that lasts only two days?
Until the anticipated 60-hour low-power mode arrives later this year, the Apple Watch Ultra currently manages a two-day battery life. While it remains impressive for an Apple Watch, it doesn't quite live up to the term "ultra."
2. The Alpine Loop is both impressive and inconvenient
I chose the vibrant orange Alpine Loop strap for my Apple Watch Ultra, which complements the aerospace-grade titanium beautifully and feels ready for adventure.
However, there are two notable drawbacks. First, a friend on YouTube, Patrick Rambles, pointed out the risk of scratching the Apple Watch Ultra with its own strap.
Second, fastening the strap can be tricky. Although it secures snugly once in place, unlike other Apple Watch straps, it’s not easy to put on in low light — a bit ironic considering its intended outdoor use.
3. The Action button placement could be better
After much contemplation, I've concluded that the Action button's location is not ideal.
I often inadvertently press it while gripping the watch to use the Digital Crown. While I could adjust the watch's orientation, I would prefer if Apple had positioned the button a bit higher. Apologies, Tim.
4. It's hard to stop admiring it
The Apple Watch Ultra captivates attention like no other product I've encountered.
While the M2 MacBook Air is lovely, it doesn't elicit the same admiration. The Apple Watch Ultra consistently draws my gaze, making me feel like I'm encountering something genuinely innovative from Apple.
This device is a breath of fresh air.
5. Stickers should have been included
Come on, Tim.
What happened to the iconic International Orange Apple stickers?
6. It inspires a sense of wanderlust
Surprisingly, owning the Apple Watch Ultra makes me want to travel, even though I don't fit the typical demographic.
I'm aware of its capabilities: it's a dive computer, has dual-frequency GPS unaffected by tall buildings, and features a siren that serves a crucial purpose.
This watch ignites a desire to explore various locales, a feeling I've never experienced with any other tech device.
7. The siren is exceptionally loud
Initially, I thought the 86-decibel siren was more of a marketing gimmick than a practical feature. However, it's undeniably effective.
It's incredibly loud — just what you need if you're in a precarious situation, like being lost in the wilderness.
Reflecting on its powerful sound, it’s clear that Apple’s audio team has outdone themselves yet again.
8. You’ll likely stick to one watch face
The Wayfinder watch face is exclusive to the Apple Watch Ultra, making it unique and highly desirable.
Once you start using it, you won't want to switch due to several compelling reasons: - Its striking design. - The moving compass surrounding the watch hands. - The cool Knight Rider mode. - Its capacity for numerous complications. - It simply stands out among other watch faces.
Kudos to Apple for this innovation.
9. You worry about damaging it
Despite the Apple Watch Ultra's rugged reputation, I find myself anxious about bumping it into walls or door frames — even more so than with previous models.
This could be attributed to the novelty of owning it, and I suspect I'll relax about it eventually. However, I want to protect that beautiful titanium for now.
With time, I know I’ll grow to appreciate it even more, but as a new owner, its presence on my wrist is notably prominent.
10. You wonder if others notice it
Let’s be honest — it crosses your mind.
It certainly does for me. The Apple Watch Ultra is distinctive enough to draw attention outside of tech circles.
Yet, perhaps it doesn’t attract as much notice as I think. Regardless, I can't help but wonder as I jog through the streets with the bright orange Alpine Loop swinging on my wrist.
“Look at that individual. Are they wearing an Apple Watch Ultra? Impressive! They must be training for an ultra marathon. Wait… is that the International Orange Action Button? I need a closer look!”
I’m convinced that's the dialogue people have as they pass by.
Conclusion
In two weeks, I'm off to the Peak District for an extensive battery and performance test of the Apple Watch Ultra on a 10-mile hike.
