12 Steps to Discovering Your Purpose Driven Life
These 12 steps have guided me significantly.
Bonus Step: On May 9, 2024, I released a book titled _Stronger Down the Stretch_ that can further aid your journey toward a purpose-driven life.
Navigating through life can be challenging, much like trying to drive in an unfamiliar area without a GPS. I've often found myself overwhelmed by the complexities of decision-making. Just as I rely on Siri for directions, we all need a guiding hand at times. The following twelve steps will help steer you toward a more meaningful existence.
Identify Your 'Why'
Before embarking on a quest for a purpose-driven life, understanding your core motivation is essential. Reflect on why you were created and what your unique contribution to the world is. As Nietzsche said,
> "He who has a why to live can bear almost any how."
Start your search by engaging in prayer or spiritual reflection. You might also find value in completing assessments that unveil your spiritual gifts and career inclinations. Knowing your 'why' is the first step toward your destination.
Establish Purposeful Goals
With your 'why' established, consider what you want to achieve. For me, writing is my passion. Much like how Eric Liddell expressed his joy in running, I feel fulfilled when I write. Therefore, I set the goal of becoming a paid writer, as financial stability allows me to pursue my passion full-time.
Develop a Strategic Plan
Whether your aim is to shed 35 pounds, compose a novel, or complete a marathon, having a plan is crucial. A solid plan outlines specific actions and strategies that will lead you toward your goals. I focused on enhancing my writing skills by enrolling in online courses and practicing consistently.
Set Measurable Objectives
Objectives serve as tangible milestones that indicate progress toward your goals. They should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART). For instance, my objectives included earning writing certifications and publishing articles weekly. Reflecting on these objectives can help you recognize areas for improvement.
Wake Up Earlier
Change requires effort, and sometimes that means adjusting your schedule. If you're serious about transforming your life, consider getting up early to work on your goals before distractions arise. Many people spend excessive time watching TV or scrolling through their phones, so cutting back on these activities can free up time for personal development.
Implement Time Blocking
Once you have a handle on your mornings, consider how to optimize the rest of your day. Time blocking allows you to allocate specific periods for tasks, enhancing productivity. For example, dedicate time for responding to emails and limit distractions to reclaim precious hours for your goals.
Establish Boundaries
Assess your ability to say no. It’s easy to get caught up in others' needs rather than focusing on your priorities. To pursue a purpose-driven life, guard your time fiercely. It’s important to recognize that not every request is urgent, and sometimes you need to prioritize your own journey.
Harness Your Inner Strength
Self-discipline can be a formidable opponent. For me, the turning point came during the pandemic when I committed to a rigorous study schedule. By embracing consistency, I was able to conquer my procrastination and achieve my goals, proving that small, steady steps lead to significant progress.
Share Your Journey
Share your aspirations with someone who will support and motivate you. This person should understand your vision and encourage you to stay focused. I confided in my wife and best friend, knowing I could trust them with my goals.
Monitor Your Progress
Tracking your achievements is vital. I maintain spreadsheets to document my writing courses, reading habits, and fitness journey. Monitoring progress provides clarity and helps you adjust your approach if necessary.
Celebrate Achievements
Remember to enjoy your journey and celebrate milestones. Acknowledge your successes, no matter how small, and allow yourself some indulgence without derailing your progress.
Recognize the Bigger Picture
Living a purpose-driven life goes beyond personal fulfillment; it also involves uplifting those around you. Striving to be the best version of yourself positively impacts your loved ones.
Embrace Your Journey The pursuit of a purpose-driven life is an earnest endeavor. It requires dedication and a commitment to the twelve steps outlined above. Stay patient and trust the process—progress happens one day at a time.
