The Wholistic Approach: Understanding Health in Its Fullness

Written on

Chapter 1: A Personal Revelation on Wholeness

This article, like many thoughts waiting to be expressed, has been lingering in my mind. Today, I finally feel ready to share it!

In conversations with my husband about the transformative effects of substances like cannabis and mushrooms, as well as various pharmaceuticals and herbs, we began to explore their underlying mechanisms—how and why they influence our bodies at the molecular and cellular levels. This exploration led us to a significant distinction in approaches to health. A favorite inspirational figure of mine, Dr. Andrew Weil, articulates this beautifully in his audiobook, "Dr. Andrew Weil’s Guide to Optimum Health." He describes health as:

“Health fundamentally means wholeness, yet many may not fully grasp what it truly means to be whole.”

He elaborates on two vital characteristics of wholeness:

“First, wholeness signifies completeness—nothing is missing. A whole entity embodies perfection, representing our ideal state. This connection extends to both spiritual and physical health.

Secondly, wholeness is about balance. Everything present is organized in a way that enables the essence of wholeness to shine through.

Thus, perfection and balance are pivotal elements of health…”

Similar to Dr. Weil's insightful perspective, I advocate for a comprehensive approach to health that considers the entirety of our existence—personally, professionally, and communally. We must reflect on the broader implications of our actions, not just their impact on ourselves but also on the planet, which ultimately influences our well-being.

We should also recognize that health encompasses more than just our physical being; it includes our emotional, spiritual, energetic, intellectual, and mental dimensions. Striving for harmony among all these aspects is essential for achieving a state of balance and 'perfection' in our lives.

As my husband and I discussed my curiosity about the intricate interactions of herbs and their properties, we also touched on the sociopolitical dimensions surrounding substances like cannabis versus alcohol and pharmaceuticals. I wonder whether researchers fully comprehend their own studies.

The multitude of variables in research often goes unaccounted for, and I approach this with utmost respect. My primary concern is understanding how comprehensively these researchers grasp their subjects, the factors at play, and how effectively they can apply their findings to real-world scenarios.

Our understanding is shaped by our experiences and the knowledge we accumulate over time. This can significantly influence the focus of our studies and the conclusions we draw.

For instance, while I deeply respect Dr. Michael Greger and his book "How Not to Die," I often contemplate the omitted variables in his discussions—like the differences in supplement quality when it comes to vitamin C. Such nuances could impact how effectively supplements function in our bodies, depending on what they are consumed with.

What information are researchers examining, and for what specific purposes? This inquiry can reshape our entire understanding of health and wellness.

My goal is to delve deeply into the intricate details of health—aiming to be both an expert and a well-rounded individual.

In the video "I am Coming! | Pr. Randy Skeete | Wholistic Support Ministry," the speaker discusses the transformative power of holistic practices and their importance in achieving overall wellness.

Chapter 2: The Essence of Wholeness

We need more than just a spiritual practice, excellent nutrition, or positive social connections. It’s essential to integrate every aspect of our lives—such as nutrient-rich soil, clean water, and healthy air—into a harmonious existence. Only through this can we truly achieve wholeness and live fully balanced lives.

Holistic Health and Well-Being

We must embrace a 'whole body' approach, recognizing that every component works in unison to foster our health. While Aristotle's assertion that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts may not hold mathematically, it resonates with the idea that understanding both parts and the whole enriches our appreciation of health.

To truly thrive, we must cultivate a life that nurtures every aspect of our being—mind, body, and spirit—while fostering a loving relationship with ourselves and our environment.

The second video, "George Visits A Holistic Healer | The Heart Attack | Seinfeld," humorously illustrates the importance of understanding holistic health, even in light-hearted contexts.

This is a glimpse into my journey as a ‘W’holisticNerd, and I hope to inspire you to expand your knowledge and awareness about health and wellness.

With love, light, and hope for a brighter, healthier tomorrow, I send blessings for your well-being.
