Dr. Mark Sanford, Ph.D., is an advocate for self-reflection and personal growth, viewing these as essential for fostering self-empowerment and change.
Dear Readers,
In this post, I am excited to introduce Dr. Mark Sanford, Ph.D., a relatively new contributor on Medium whose work offers valuable insights into personal development. Dr. Sanford began sharing his thoughts on Medium in December 2021 and has quickly become a contributor to my publications, penning 65 essays that explore themes such as self-respect, goal achievement, and overcoming personal challenges.
Allow me to briefly outline his academic and professional journey to provide context for his insights. Dr. Sanford graduated cum laude from Stanford University in 1963 and pursued a Ph.D. in sociology at UC Berkeley, completing it in 1969. His teaching career began at Santa Clara University and continued at Stockton State University in Pomona, NJ, culminating at the Wright Institute in Berkeley, CA, in 1979.
During his time at the Wright Institute, he received a grant from the San Francisco Foundation to investigate smoking habits in public spaces. The findings from this research played a significant role in shaping non-smoking laws throughout the United States.
After his academic tenure, Dr. Sanford obtained a certificate in Addiction Studies from JFK University’s School of Professional Psychology and worked as an addiction counselor at Mt. Diablo Medical Center in Concord, CA. He later transitioned into sales, establishing an online business catering to the training needs of various organizations.
Dr. Sanford also earned a certificate in Personal and Executive Coaching from the College of Executive Coaching in Ventura, CA, and has since dedicated himself to writing about personal development, behavior change, and self-coaching. He authored three books: “Making it In Graduate School,” “Fearless Cold Calling,” and “Fearless Weight Loss.”
With a wealth of knowledge about both institutional and private spheres, Dr. Sanford shares his experiences with the Medium community. His collection of over nine thousand files serves as a foundation for his writings on personal change and development.
His early life was marked by emotional challenges, which sparked an interest in coping strategies that lead to personal achievements such as quitting smoking, losing weight, maintaining sobriety, and engaging in community service. Dr. Sanford believes that introspection and self-awareness are crucial for initiating self-empowerment and personal transformation.
He views self-improvement not only as a process of eliminating negative habits but also as an opportunity to cultivate enriching new interests. By sharing his life lessons, Dr. Sanford hopes to inspire others to enhance their lives through understanding behavior change and developing self-respect—an essential component for building confidence and achieving success.
He aligns his philosophy with Harry Murray’s idea that the ultimate goal of personal development is to create a life philosophy and embody it. Dr. Sanford’s writing style is characterized by clarity, as he simplifies complex topics and relates them to his personal experiences.
